Mockumentary Poster Progression: Title and Subtitle

The title on a poster must be on of the first things my audience look at when the see my poster. With this in mind, I made decided to use white text with a large font.

For my subtitle I decided to go with "A story of optimism and depression", my audience have voted this to be my subtitle as it implies that the show is a comedy as well as some implications of a teacher's view on their students.

Mockumentary Poster Progression: Review Quotes

My first review on my poster is from a reviewer who works for Little White Lies magazine, a magazine in the UK who publishes articles on films and other media. I decided to use quite a generic quote as this makes my mockumentary seem appealing to a wide-scale audience.

The next review I have was from Sight and Sound magazine, a magazine published by the British Film Institute. This review is a bit more of conversational tone, this allows it to appeal to a wide audience as it would sound more appealing than simply putting a star rating on the front of my poster.

Mockumentary Poster Progression: Credits

The next step is to add the credits to the poster. I decided to use Niagara Solid as it looks similar to the fonts used in the other posters I analysed. I have included a production company, director, actors, editor, and a director of photography, these are all very common roles to see credited on a poster.

Mockumentary Poster Progression: Production and Distribution Companies

One convention of all posters which advertise media is that they display their production company and distribution companies on the poster. These 5 companies would be ideal for producing a British mockumentary.

Cave Bear: This is a production company which specializes in British comedy shows. They've worked on projects such as The Bad Education Movie, a film which is similar to my mockumentary.

Big Lottery Fund + BFI: Some of the funding for my mockumentary would come from these two companies. They support UK filmmakers, actors and crew members by funding new innovative ideas, such as my mockumentary.

Film4: This production company works with UK filmmakers to create media surrounding the area of everyday life; this would work well with my mockumentary as it is based upon school life.

Warp Films: A UK based production company which specializes in amusing and thought provoking films. This company would work well with creating my mockumentary as it contains a lot of comedic conventions such as satire, and cynical humour.

Mockumentary Poster Progression: The Main Image

Firstly I've decided on a black background. I want to create the effect of a spotlight being placed upon the two main characters.

Next, I used the Quick Selection Tool to select the edges of my models.

By doing this, I've now removed the background and can begin to position and edit my models.

To create the effect of a spotlight, I've used the Color Range tool to remove some of the colour.

The next step I need to do is to remove the white outline as it stands out too much. An other issue I need to tackle is the fact that my model's lips are way too black.

I used the Dodge Tool to change the colour of my model's lips from black to a pink colour.

This is my models which are now complete. The next step is to reference my production and distribution companies.

Mockumentary Editing Progress: Basic Cuts

My next step is to implement the most basic of edits, the cut. Since I used 2 cameras whilst filming the maths classroom scene, I can switch between the two angles at any point. As shown here:

When editing the two pieces of footage to create one video, I ensured that the videos were in sync by counting down before the scene took place. This allows me to have perfect cuts which will not jump between two different frames. I've also decided to use the razor tool to cut between the two videos as this is much more efficient than cropping the video to a specific point and having to insert the same video over and over again.

Filming: Going against the 180° Rule

When filming The Supply, I decided to go against the common conventions of the 180 degree rule as this would show that the film-making is amateur. I went ahead and asked my audience if they were aware of this; they told me that I should keep it like this as it adds to the idea that the mockumentary breaks standard film-making techniques.

Mockumentary Editing Progress: Preparing footage for editing

So the first thing I need to do is import the footage in the correct order. I have ordered all of my footage by assigning them a number which will roughly align with my story boards. Once I have all of the footage ordered correctly, I placed it into Premiere and rendered the sequence to see what an unedited version of my mockumentary would look like.

Main Character

For my model, I wanted him to look exactly like a supply teacher. I went for a smart look, but jumbled look. To do this, I had the pens placed in the breast pocket and a awkwardly tucked-in shirt. By giving him a satchel, it shows that he isn't too formal enough for a brief case and not casual enough for a rucksack.
